Initial Development
Tetris Tumble went through multiple stages of development. After communicating with the Tetris Company, The plan was to be faithful to the original IP, so I designed specifically around gameplay mechanics to introduce different hazards and gameplay elements.
I worked particularly close with the engineering team to create and balance an AI that could play a real time game of Tetris, to create the board. This went through various balance iterations to have an AI which was good enough to complete sections of the game, but make enough errors to give more playspace for the players.
Gameplay
Players start the game at the base of a Tetris board, in which an AI is playing a game of Tetris in real time. As different blocks drop, they activate all blocks of the same colour, causing different effects:
Yellow - Arrow Trap
Orange - Conveyor
Red - Fireballs
Purple - Flipper
Blue - Water Jets
Turquoise - Slippery
Green - Sticky
If a Line is cleared by the AI, it will disappear and cause a ripple effect, bouncing players down the board. If the AI hits the ceiling and creates a "game over" every row will disappear from top to bottom, leaving the last stumbler standing.
